The Dwarven Cave is above all a place of legend where can be practiced climbing.

The rocks of the Cave of the Dwarves form an impressive gorge about 25 meters high called Erdwibalaschlucht (the parade of the little women of the earth) and formed by the working of water in the karst limestone. According to legend, these little women of the earth lived with the Erdmanala (little men of the earth) inside the Cave of the Dwarves. Located at the bottom of the gorge, the cave takes on the appearance of a slit that opens in the rock wall and continues through two guts, all developed over about fifteen meters.

Above the gorge, you can access the Plateau des Nains. From there, we have a beautiful view of the Ill valley and the villages of Bouxwiller, Werentzhouse. The place also bears the name of Erdwibalafelsen (Roche aux Fées).

2 possible accesses:
- park in the parking lot of the Communauté de Communes in Ferrette (3A route de Lucelle) and take the red diamond path along the road towards Sondersdorf. Allow 30 to 35 minutes to access the cave (1,8km).

- park in the Keucht car park located in the forest. Take the direction of Sondersdorf and, a little before leaving the village, take the forest path on your left indicated by a wooden sign "Sentier des Nains". Continue to the car park located a few hundred meters further on. From the car park, count 15-20min walk on a beautiful path accessible by 4X4 stroller.

FAQ – The Dwarf Cave of Ferrette

1. What is the Dwarf Cave?
The Dwarf Cave is a natural and legendary site located in Ferrette. It lies within an impressive 25-meter-deep limestone gorge called the Erdwibalaschlucht. According to legend, it was inhabited by the Erdmanala (little men of the earth) and the "little women of the earth." The cave itself is a fissure in the rock, extended by two passages for about fifteen meters, offering a mysterious and picturesque setting.

2. Is it possible to practice sports activities in the cave?
Yes, the Grotte des Nains is a popular climbing site. The rock faces of the gorge offer routes suitable for beginners and more experienced climbers (from 6B to 8A). The natural configuration of the limestone allows this activity to be practiced in a spectacular setting, especially in summer as the site is shaded and cool.

3. What can be seen from the Dwarf Plateau?
The Plateau des Nains, situated above the gorge, offers a panoramic view of the Ill valley and the surrounding villages, such as Bouxwiller and Werentzhouse. This viewpoint, also known as Erdwibalafelsen or "Fairy Rock," is ideal for admiring the landscape and enjoying the natural beauty of the Sundgau region.

4. What are the access routes to get to the Dwarf Cave?
Two accesses are possible:

  1. From the parking lot of the Rocher Media Library (3A route de Lucelle), follow the red diamond trail towards Sondersdorf (approximately 30–35 minutes for 1,8 km).
  2. From the Keucht car park in the forest, via the "Dwarf Trail", approximately 15–20 minutes walk on an easy path accessible by 4x4 stroller.

5. Is the visit suitable for families and children?
Yes, the cave and its trails are accessible to families. The path from the Keucht parking lot is easy and safe, even for young children in all-terrain strollers (with large wheels). The legend of the dwarves and little earth women adds a playful dimension that appeals to children and makes the visit interactive.

6. What is the historical and legendary significance of the cave?
The Dwarf Cave combines natural heritage and local legend. The stories of Erdmanala and the little earth women convey the folklore of the Sundgau region, while the gorge and limestone rock bear witness to the area's geological history. This blend makes it a unique place, at once cultural, touristic, and natural.
