This 3653 km route, which connects the Atlantic to the Black Sea, follows the three largest European rivers, the Loire, the Rhine and the Danube, from Nantes to Budapest, crossing 10 countries.

In Alsace, it crosses the Sundgau along the Rhône-Rhine canal then joins Mulhouse Kembs and Huningue before entering Switzerland.

The majority of the route in the Sundgau follows secure greenways as they are separated from car traffic, the rest using low traffic roads or cycle facilities.
