Au 19^e century, more than two hundred mills were in operation along the waterways of this small “southern county”: flour mills, oil mills, hemp fulling mills, sawmills, paper mills, hammer forges.
Each mill is a masterpiece of ingenuity: simplicity and efficiency of the mechanisms, perfect knowledge of the surrounding natural environment, perfect adaptation to the assets and constraints of this environment.
Setting off to discover the Sundgau mills means rediscovering techniques and knowledge that are sometimes forgotten, it means reviving an entire rural society, and it also means renewing the way we look at our environment.
